If you are a regular reader of my blog posts, you would have learnt about various types of natural locks and their unique techniques. Nevertheless, locks are a beautiful and versatile hairstyle that allows us to embrace our natural hair texture and celebrate our unique journey. If you're ready to start your own natural lock journey, with great delight, I am here to guide you through the exciting and transformative process.
Starting natural locks requires patience, as the process involves allowing your hair to naturally merge and tangle. I encourage you to embrace the journey as you practise, by understanding that the beauty of natural locks unfolds gradually over time.
There are various methods to start natural locks, so it is wise to choose a method that aligns with your desired outcome and hair type. I have written a few common methods to guide you below:
Two-Strand Twists: This is when you twist hair strands together to lock them.
Freeform: This is when you allow your hair to naturally lock on its own.
Comb Coils: Here, you create small coils by tightly coiling sections of your hair.
It is important to note that a clean hair is essential for the natural locking process of your desired locks. So, starting with freshly washed hair and using a cleansing shampoo to remove any product buildup will provide a better foundation for the locks to form.
Before you start the locking process, gently detangle your hair using a wide-tooth comb or your fingers. Section your hair into manageable parts to ensure an organised and uniform locking process and select the right products. This is important for maintaining the health of your natural locks. You can use natural oils, water-based moisturisers, and residue-free shampoos; depending on your type of locks, but always avoid products containing heavy waxes or buildup-inducing ingredients.
Once your hair is detangled and sectioned, you can then choose from the lock options i provided above and use the methods to start your natural locks journey. While at it, it is important to be gentle during this process to prevent unnecessary hair breakage.
After creating your desired type of locks, it is important to note that regular maintenance of the locks is crucial for healthy and beautiful locks. In order to maintain your locks at your convenience, i will be sharing a few care tips with you:
Wash your locks regularly to avoid buildup and keep them clean.
Roll each lock between your palms to make them smooth and tight.
Separate your locks regularly, to avoid having naturally large matted sections.
As a beginner, it is important for you to note that starting natural locks is a journey, and that's why I encourage you to be patient and enjoy the process. Don't be overwhelmed, rather, allow your locks to evolve and transform over time, and be proud of the uniqueness of your natural hair.
