As a natural hair specialist and Loctician, I am always asked by my clients and random people how they can grow their natural hair. Most times, it seems like a magical technique or something complex, but my answer is always consistent “you are the reason why your hair doesn’t grow”.

As black women, we embark on our natural hair journey to celebrate self-love and embrace our unique beauty. However, the path to natural hair growth is often clouded by misconceptions that can hinder the growth progress of our natural hair and lead to frustration. Hence, today I have decided to share some delusional factors hindering the growth of our natural hair.

1. They say “natural African hair can't grow long”:

One pervasive misconception is that natural African hair cannot achieve significant length. Well, when you properly take care of your natural hair, it will thrive and grow beautifully. Activities like regular trims to prevent split ends, consistent moisturising routine, and protective styling are key practices I recommend for promoting healthy and extended natural hair growth.

2. They think natural hair doesn't need regular washing:

Contrary to popular belief, natural hair requires regular washing to thrive. Some people fear that frequent washing will strip the hair of its natural oils, but that’s not true because a clean scalp is crucial for healthy hair growth. Always incorporate a sulphate-free shampoo and moisturising conditioner into your hair-wash routine and make protective styles to ensure optimal natural hair health you will enjoy.

3. Some people think protective styles guarantee fast growth:

A lot of people assume that protective styles are beneficial for minimising breakage and retaining length, but they don’t know that the styles don't guarantee rapid hair growth. Rather, consistent care and a general approach, including a balanced diet rich in nutrients, hydration, and stress management, play significant roles in promoting natural hair growth. Protective styles should complement an overall healthy hair care routine.

4. They think trimming slows down growth:

Some people believe that frequent trims hinder natural hair growth. I’m here to debunk that today because regular trims are essential for maintaining healthy hair. Trimming helps prevent split ends and breakage, allowing your hair to grow without the hindrance of damaged ends. As a matter of fact, I recommend you schedule trims every 8-12 weeks for optimal results.

5. They think products alone can stimulate growth:

As much as quality hair care products are essential, they are not a magic solution for instant natural hair growth. I would rather prefer you embrace a holistic approach of proper hair hydration, a balanced diet, protective styling, and consistent care to support optimal growth. Selecting products tailored to your hair's specific needs is crucial, but they work best as part of a comprehensive routine.

6. Some people think that natural hair doesn't need moisture:

Some people hinder the growth of their hair by not moisturising it regularly. Instead, I would like to emphasise that natural hair, particularly curly textures, tend to be more prone to dryness. Regular deep conditioning treatments, leave-in conditioners, and water-based moisturisers are crucial components of a natural hair care routine to maintain hydration and prevent breakage.

In conclusion, at Munilicious Locs, we encourage everyone on a natural hair journey to embrace the uniqueness of their hair and challenge these common hair care errors. A combination of proper care, a healthy lifestyle, and patience are the keys to unlocking the full potential of your natural hair growth. Remember, your hair is as unique as you are, and with the right knowledge and practices, it can thrive and flourish beautifully. Apply all you learnt here today and let your natural hair journey be a source of empowerment and self-expression to others.
