I started my Lock journey on the 31st of October, 2016, which happened to be a Halloween night. It was a lonely night in a Lock studio with just my Loctician and I, as we could hear doorbells of the neighbours ring and little spooky voices screaming "Trick or Threat"! The 18 hours Lock install felt like hocus pocus, as I was initiated and welcomed into my Lock Journey (which would later become a career for me), that memorable creepy night.

Oh! I almost forgot to tell you; my hair length was between 3 to 4 inches at that time and the thought of having very long Locks in a few years time, was a mystery full of excitement, self-motivation, stylish innovations, patience and uncertainties, yet I was bold enough to face the night.

I lost my loose hair that Halloween night and have lived through the mysteries behind the rapid growth of my locks. Today, I am counting down to the next Halloween night to celebrate my seven years "Locaversary" with my beautiful 18 inches golden Locks. My rapid hair growth has got many people asking to know why my Locks grow so fast, because loose hairs of people with African descent hardly ever grow beyond 12 inches. These unending questions resurrected the curious cat in me and I decided to research and experiment with a few locks on my head by cutting them off and untangling them to uncover the mysteries within the strands of my hair.

Now, I am ready and glad to share the mystery behind rapid hair growth through Locks. Just like watching the Walking Dead on a Halloween night, about half the length of ones Locks are made up of tangled dead hair, holding on tight and dangling from their scalp as they elegantly walk down the streets. These dead strands of hair are entangled with the beautiful fresh growths after they break off from our scalp over the years and that steadily increases the length of our Locks. On the other hand, regular loose hairs shed overtime, just like our skin and other cells in the body, that's why they don't grow as long as Locks.

In addition to my findings, I have come to the conclusion that daily behavioural activities like hair combing, braiding, tight hairstyles and choice of hair grooming chemicals like certain shampoos, hair straightening chemicals, conditioners, hair colours and oils contribute to damaging ones loose hairs and increase chances of stunted hair growth in women with African descent. Hence, every black woman can grow her natural hair to her most desired length through properly maintained Locks in form of Sisterlocks or Dreadlocks.
